So, it drove like a gas hybrid and only saw spurts of performance as a result of the regen. We recently went on the search for a new compact SUV and looked at the Rav4 Prime, CR-V Touring Hybrid, and the new Tucson Limited here in the US (both hybrid and non versions).Ģ021 Rav4 Prime - In fairness to the Rav4 Prime we tested, it just came off the truck when we drove it and … it was not charged. I'm a long time Toyota guy and for the most part, their vehicles have not disappointed over the years. Not segment-leading material, but it's a decent all-arounder. The steering feels accurate enough and the car is easy to place where you want it. Feels like it handles pretty good, but with the engine, you don't ever really have much speed to carry through the corners anyway. Around the handling loop, it’s clear the suspension is not as soft as the Hybrid's so you don't have work around excessive pitch and squat. Nothing remarkable to note here steering is pretty accurate and well weighted. Just like on the Hybrid, it actually helps tighten your line when it's on. The steering returns a mild amount of feedback too, and the stability control system is fairly unobtrusive. Otherwise lateral roll feels pretty similar and mostly mild for a compact SUV. Far less pitch and squat when making throttle adjustments. Handling: The suspension feels quite a bit less soft than on the Tucson Hybrid. There's a bit of steering wheel wiggle and pedal pulses, which is typical, but the noises are muted. The brakes feel pretty typical with an average stroke length and medium-soft effort. There's a mild to moderate amount of nosedive, but it feels about right for an SUV. ![]() There's decent braking stability even it doesn't stay completely straight at all times. Braking: Average braking performance here. The paddle shifters are sometimes unresponsive when you're not moving. At least it doesn't sound as harsh and strained as Hyundai engines we've tested in the past. ![]() It's not really in a hurry to get anywhere. Powerbraking helps a little, although you can only really get it up to 1,800 rpm, and the car upshifts about 200 rpm before redline. It happens on the initial baseline run as well as when powerbraking. There's a slight hesitation right off the line, almost like the transmission is short shifting or the engine stumbles briefly. Finally, the Limited Hybrid trim is similarly equipped as the standard Limited trim.ĭriver’s Comments Acceleration: I’m not impressed with this naturally aspirated Hyundai four-cylinder. The SEL Convenience trim level largely matches the non-hybrid SEL fitted with the Convenience package.
